  *This image is copyright of its original author The Hulk of Tadoba. The size of a tiger is an indicative figure of the size and type of prey base in that particular range. Male tigers reach their primes by 8 or 9 years of age, when they look the biggest in their entire life. While evolution drifts an animal towards larger body size, extinction bias caps that body size. The current size at which tigers are capped is a result of this fragile balance. Additional factors (other than prey size), such as climate, adaptive radiation to prey size, metabolic constraints on islands, inter and intra-specific competition have influenced the growth factor (though the growth wasn't linear across the time line). Following Cope’s rule – lineages tend to increase in body size over evolutionary time, it is understandable that modern day tigers are bigger than their ancestral counterparts such as the Genus Panthera Zydanskyi (Longdan tiger) or the Clade of the Species Panthera Tigris Amoyensis (South China Tiger) and following Bergmann’s rule – species of larger body size are found in colder climates, the Bengal Tiger and Amur tiger are the biggest extant tigers on Earth today. This is in addition to the prey-size. In my observation (substantiated with evolutionary laws) certain tigers (intra –species) have shown the ability to grow to exceptional sizes. As most biologists would concur, tigers spend a whole lot of energy on hunting prey. Tigers don’t hunt smaller prey as the energy required to hunt would outdo the energy they gain from it. The bigger the prey, the longer it lasts and the longer the time needed by a tiger to hunt again. (A genomic imprinting - the genes of a big male tiger being carried forward in the lineages, and not supressed by the female tiger is also responsible for the bulking of tigers). Photographed is the Matkasur male tiger (will talk about his origins later), that is the most dominant tiger of his range, bringing down bigger prey such as Gaurs and Sambhars. He is still a couple of years away from his prime, and my best bets is that he will grow into one of the biggest tigers the range has ever seen. The tiger was first camera trapped at Bandi Kallara road in Hediyala range on Jan 16, 2009.  *This image is copyright of its original author Bengaluru: In a big blow to Bandipur tiger reserve, male tiger 'Prince', a huge crowd favourite at the reserve, was found dead near Lokkere, Elachetti section of Kundkere range. According to sources, the tiger reportedly died of starvation. Prince, alias Kunta alias BPT 222 (identification by tiger biologist K Ullas Karanth) was twelve years old. The tiger was first camera trapped at Bandi Kallara road in Hediyala range on Jan 16, 2009, and had an estimated long range of 35-40 kms. I don't come on here often anymore. But I just want to acknowledge what a huge loss this is. The legendary Prince has captivated all of us for so long on each forum. He is one of the tigers from that golden generation thay we were so privelidged to witness and study. The guar killer was enchanting and his reign was long and supreme. Now is a time to celebrate his life, and appreciate what a beast he was.
I'm happy he died naturally though. As it should be and what should've happened with Machli.

I was fortunate to have had close encounters of Prince during every visit I made to Bandipur. During the early days in 2009-10, he seemed the dominant male and this continued until recently. I named him Prince in 2010, since another huge dominant male named Agastya was ruling the tourism zone of Bandipur. But soon he perished and Prince took over almost the entire tourism zone.
As per the research and camera traps records, Prince migrated from Begur range to Bandipur tourism zone. Despite so many safari vehicles plying in the tourism zone, Prince never bothered to shy away and went about his business like territory marking. He simply loved water and most of the time he was seen resting in a waterhole.
He also holds records of hunting down large prey like the Indian bison (Gaurs) on many occasions. He was known to even hunt down cattle that ventured into the protected forests.
On July 1, 2014, he chased a large herd of 21 domesticated buffalos near Moolapura waterhole and killed three of them. I still remember many of my friends not just from Karnataka but also other states and various countries visited Bandipur to have a glimpse of this amazing feline.

In their prime, the most beautiful and one of largest tiger was katezari male. He is now 8-9 years. Waghdoh was also very large in his prime. Matkasur is big and have large territory but he may not grow as large as these 2 tigers. He is now around 6 years. And he got this area exclusively after last monsoon ie Oct 15. Since then Saturn/Namdev, Katezari aren't seen in this area. 2) I think matkasur and kankazari are not half brothers. Matkasur; also called new matkasur male because the original matkasur male was Saturn/namdev. Saturn is father of this New matkasur male. Kankazari is son of katezari male. If anyone compares the facial marks and other features, that will show. Anyway tigers are very mysterious creatures so no none can substantiate the facts though. He does a great job of identifying old missing tigers and link them. But if you see facial markings and other features; new Matkasur male doesn't resemble Katezari male. I have seen katezari and Matkasur from very close . Katezari male had prominent mane since he was just 3.5 to 4 years old when I spotted him in Jan 2012. Anyway its tiger's mysterious world and that's why we are hypnotized by them. And when I saw katezari male @ 3.5 -4 years old , he was much more beautiful and muscular than current Matkasur male. Anyway that's my personal opinion though.
