RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Luipaard - 06-11-2021 From the Kgalagadi Leopard Project Facebook page: "We reckon that this wildebeest is probably around 80-100kg based on its age (~1 year). A male springbok is around 41kg. So approximately double that!" *This image is copyright of its original author

'In Agrapatana, Sambar was most frequently represented in scat samples (59.1%), consistent with probable prey availability, given that the study area is contiguous with Horton Plains National Park (HPNP) where sambar density is estimated to be 66.5/km² (Rajapakse 2003). ' 'Previous scat analysis from HPNP found sambar in 75.8% of samples (N=22) (Ranawana et al. 1998). That fewer samples contained Sambar here than in HPNP, and more contained Black-naped Hare and Purple-faced Langurs (Table 3; 13.6% compared to 6.8% and 3.4% in HPNP, Ranawana et al. 1998) hints at variation in prey availability between the core of a protected area such as HPNP and an adjoining yet peripheral area such as Agrapatana.' source: Kittle, Andrew M., et al. RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Styx38 - 07-04-2021 Adult female Zebra killed by Leopard. "25-27 September 2019 We came across an adult zebra mare carcass that, by the signs had been recently killed by a leopard – not a common prey option for leopard! No leopard in sight (or from what we could see with our poor human eyes) - we put up a camera trap. When looking at the camera trap images the next morning, we saw that a female leopard came back to her kill only about 19 minutes after we had finished putting up the camera and driven away. These photos show that two different female leopards fed off the carcass as well as bushpig, spotted hyena and African civet!" *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author https://m.facebook.com/pg/welgevonden.research/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2465585130213470 RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Styx38 - 07-08-2021 Leopard with Sambar kill. RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Styx38 - 07-26-2021 Here is a Sambar Deer that was killed by a Leopard in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand. RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Luipaard - 07-28-2021 Such an opportunistic hunter; this mating pair noticed an impala incoming and decided to take it down although it was the male who took it actually down. |
