Good question, but it's a tricky answer.
- They have already encountered the Majingilane, so they know what the older males are about, they know they're not to be messed with, even if the Birmingham males are younger and fitter.
- Like Sik mentioned, they already have a massive territory, and also dominate several prides. Always keep in mind that the reason lions expand their land isn't just to have more in a greedy sense like we humans would do, but they do it to control resources, namely food (prey availability) and lionesses of reproductive age.
- When talking about them, they have been expanding a lot in the last months, to the north first even managing control of one of the northern prides, and also to the south and center of MalaMala and as you said, scouting Londolozi.
- When scouting foreign land, lions are usually careful and stick together(as they should) and, should the option present of facing old males but still fit enough to give a good fight, or instead walk into unprotected land with no dominant coalition to defend it, then I think anyone can agree that the better option between the two is fairly obvious.

A Birmingham male lion gazes in our direction as the morning light catches his face. This coalition of four brothers is being viewed more and more often on Londolozi, making for some exciting game drives. Expect to see a lot more of them in 2018…

Another sighting of a Birmingham male. This individual was calling continuously all evening. One of his brothers was found at the same time on the opposite end of the reserve, also calling. They met up over night, travelling several miles together.

MALAMALA TODAY: January 7th&8th. Chaos erupted late on Saturday evening when 2 clans of hyenas competed over a large carcass near the confluence of the Matshapiri River and the Sand River. The Matshapiri male lion was next to get in on the spoils but his time there was short-lived... The 4 Gowrie males charged in and took possession of the bounty- the Matshapiri male narrowly escaped with his life. Later on in the morning he was found along the lower reaches of the Kapen River. 3 Kambula lionesses joined the Gowrie males and a 4th Kambula lioness, the one that has recently given birth, was seen south of the Rock Drift Donga. This afternoon 2 of the Gowrie males were spotted close to Main Camp sporting fresh-battle wounds. The other 2 coalition members were with 4 Kambula lionesses near Matumi Rocks and the Matshapiri male was in front of Rattray’s Camp. Both Avoca males were viewed in Charleston.

Morning Drive
- Our morning began with a very big herd of buffalo who moved down to the waterhole. They drank and then moved back out of the area.
- Found the whole Styx pride of lions along with three of the Birmingham male lions (Tinyo, Nehna & Nsuku) all laying along the main road.
